Heavy Snowfall and Avalanche Risks in the Northern Alps
On December 23, 2024, heavy snowfall blanketed the Northern Alps, prompting Météo France to issue an orange alert for snow and ice in four departments: Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Isère, and Ain. The snowfall began overnight, accumulating between 5 to 10 cm at 500 meters, with higher elevations receiving up to 60 cm. This significant weather event has raised concerns about avalanche risks, particularly in the mid-mountains and high-altitude areas, where off-piste skiing is strongly discouraged due to unstable snow conditions.
Avalanche Alerts and Road Closures
The avalanche risk is particularly high, with Météo France warning of potential large avalanches that could impact exposed mountain roads and high-altitude infrastructure. In response to these conditions, access to the Mont Blanc tunnel was temporarily closed to facilitate the preventive triggering of avalanches. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, especially in the Hautes-Alpes, where a yellow warning for snow and ice is in effect. Authorities have banned traffic on the Col du Lautaret due to expected wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h, which pose a risk of snowdrifts.
Weather Forecast and Safety Precautions
The snowfall is expected to continue throughout the day, with intensities gradually decreasing by the afternoon. Météo France forecasts an additional 10 to 25 cm of snow at 800 meters and 40 to 60 cm at around 1,000 meters over the next 48 hours. The northwest wind remains strong, contributing to snow accumulation in certain areas. As conditions evolve, residents and travelers are urged to stay informed and prepared, utilizing winter tires or chains when driving in affected regions.
