The National Assembly of France is witnessing a significant influx of new deputies following the early legislative elections held on June 30 and July 7. Among the newly elected officials, over 150 are first-time deputies, many coming from diverse backgrounds and civil society, representing various political parties including La France insoumise (LFI), the National Rally (RN), and the New Popular Front (NFP).
One such newcomer is Bérenger Cernon, a 36-year-old railway worker and union leader from Essonne, who ended the 27-year reign of Nicolas Dupont-Aignan. Cernon, a candidate for LFI, has been actively involved in social struggles, particularly against pension reform and for the renationalization of the SNCF.
Peio Dufau, another NFP candidate, has made history as the first 'abertzale' activist to be elected. Representing the 6th constituency of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Dufau, a 45-year-old Basque railway worker, is a strong advocate for Basque autonomy and the preservation of agricultural land.
Hugo Prévost, a 24-year-old master's student in economics, won the 1st constituency of Isère, defeating former minister Olivier Véran. Prévost, who comes from a left-wing background, aims to prioritize student precariousness as a member of parliament.
Dieynaba Diop, a literature, history, and geography teacher, has been elected in the 9th constituency of Yvelines. Supported by the Socialist Party, Diop plans to leave her teaching position to fully commit to her role as a deputy, focusing on rural areas and opening a mobile office in her constituency.
Céline Thiébault-Martinez, a director of a mutual fund and long-time Socialist Party activist, now represents the 9th constituency of Seine-et-Marne. She aims to combat medical desertification and has extensive experience in parliamentary work.
Aly Diouara, known for his community activism in Seine-Saint-Denis, has been elected in the 5th constituency. Diouara, who leads the political and citizen movement 'La Seine-Saint-Denis au Cœur,' is committed to addressing issues such as elevator breakdowns in large towers and school support.
Emmanuel Tjibaou, the first Kanak separatist elected since 1986, now represents the second constituency of New Caledonia. Tjibaou, son of the Kanak leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou, aims to address the ongoing violence and seek a resolution to the current crisis in the archipelago.
Boris Tavernier, a community activist focused on food insecurity, has been elected in the 2nd constituency of Rhône. Tavernier, who founded the VRAC association, is dedicated to creating a more just and united society through his 'social food security' project.
David Magnier, a former Yellow Vest and catering manager, has been elected in the 7th constituency of Oise. Magnier joined the National Rally in 2021 and is committed to supporting purchasing power measures.
Flavien Termet, the youngest deputy at 22, now represents the 1st constituency of the Ardennes. A law and political science student, Termet promises to support measures to improve purchasing power.
- The newly elected deputies are currently familiarizing themselves with the National Assembly, with activities including the issuance of badges, photo sessions, and distribution of the MP's 'kit'.
- The New Popular Front (NFP) emerged as the leading party in the legislative elections with 184 deputies, followed by the presidential Renaissance party and its allies with 166 seats, and the National Rally with 143 seats. The Republicans and other right-wing parties secured 65 seats.
