Nantes Airport Operations Halted Due to Firefighters' Strike
Nantes Atlantique airport is facing significant disruptions on Wednesday, November 6, as a strike by firefighters has resulted in the cancellation of all flights. The strike, initiated by the local aircraft rescue and firefighting service (SSLIA), has paralyzed airport operations since 6 a.m., affecting approximately 97 flights, including 48 arrivals and 49 departures. The airport's communications department confirmed that the absence of firefighters, whose presence is mandatory for safe airport operations, has led to the grounding of all planes for the day.
Affected passengers have been informed by airlines, and the airport management is urging travelers to reach out to their respective airlines or travel agencies for updates on their flights. The airport has also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers and is offering options for reservation cancellations or modifications for parking spaces.
Ongoing Negotiations and Future Implications
The strike is part of a broader social movement initiated by the CGT AGO union, which has filed a strike notice that will remain in effect until December 31. The union's demands include hiring additional personnel, salary increases, recognition of seniority, and discussions regarding career endings. Negotiations with Vinci, the airport's concessionaire, began on November 5 but have not yet reached a resolution.
Interestingly, the strike coincided with a planned civil security exercise at the airport, aimed at testing the response capabilities of various services in the event of an aircraft emergency. Despite the ongoing strike, airport management announced that the exercise would proceed as scheduled later in the day, with some adjustments. This situation highlights the critical role of the SSLIA in maintaining airport safety and operations, underscoring the need for effective dialogue between the union and airport management.
