Morocco's Ambitious Airport Expansion Plans
Morocco is set to significantly enhance its airport capacity as part of its preparations to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch announced plans to increase the country's airport capacity from the current 38 million passengers to 80 million by 2030. This initiative aims to boost tourism and improve transport infrastructure in collaboration with Spain and Portugal.
The expansion will see Casablanca Airport's capacity rise to 23.3 million passengers, supported by the construction of a third runway and upgraded passenger terminal facilities. Additionally, Marrakech Airport will accommodate 14 million passengers, while Agadir Airport's capacity will increase to 6.3 million. Other airports, including Rabat-Salé, Tetouan, and Al Hoceima-Chérif Al Idrissi, have already undergone expansion and equipment upgrades.
Enhancing Transportation Infrastructure
In conjunction with airport developments, Morocco is also focusing on improving its high-speed train network. The ONCF aims to extend the network to Marrakech and eventually to Agadir, doubling the number of cities served to 43 by 2040. The high-speed line from Kenitra to Marrakech will span 430 kilometers at an estimated cost of 53 billion dirhams ($5.3 billion), linking major airports and enhancing connectivity.
Sports Infrastructure Development
As part of its World Cup preparations, Morocco plans to renovate and expand 45 stadiums and training sites across six cities. A new stadium near Casablanca, with a capacity of 115,000 spectators, is also in the works, with total costs for stadium development estimated at 5 billion dirhams ($500 million). In addition to the World Cup, Morocco will host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, further emphasizing the need for robust sports infrastructure.
