Russia has positioned itself as a security guarantor for Moldova amid global instability, according to opposition presidential candidate Vasily Bolea. During a recent congress of the Moldovan 'Victory' bloc in Moscow, Bolea emphasized the necessity of a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), arguing that Moldova has been stripped of its identity and is being prepared for subservience to Europe. He criticized the current Moldovan government under President Maya Sandu, citing a dramatic increase in national debt and alleging that key decisions are made externally rather than in Chisinau. The congress, attended by various opposition members and Gagauzia's head Evgenia Gutsul, witnessed discussions on the economic stranglehold imposed by the government, with calls for restoring historical ties with Russia.
Economic Crisis and Political Repression in Moldova
The congress highlighted the dire economic situation in Moldova, described by parliament member Regina Apostolova as a nation burdened with enormous debts and reliant on loans. Ilan Shor, leader of the Pobeda bloc, warned of impending disaster for the country, advocating for integration with post-Soviet states as a solution. The event also underscored the challenges faced by the opposition, which has been subjected to harassment and repression by the ruling authorities. Russian Foreign Ministry representative Maria Zakharova commented on the situation, likening it to Ukraine's struggles and criticizing the Moldovan government's focus on suppressing dissent rather than addressing pressing socio-economic issues.
