Modi and Putin Strengthen Ties at BRICS Summit
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the deepening relationship between India and Russia during his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the BRICS summit in Kazan, Tatarstan. Modi stated, "My visits to Russia twice in the last three months demonstrate our close relationship and strengthening of our friendship." This meeting marks the second encounter between the two leaders in just three months, following Modi's visit to Moscow in July, where he referred to Putin as a "friend" amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
U.S. Discontent Over India-Russia Relations
The growing partnership between India and Russia has raised concerns within the Biden administration, particularly as India has become a significant buyer of Russian oil amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to reports, India has increased its purchases of Russian oil by more than 20 times compared to pre-war levels, benefiting from discounted prices and saving approximately $13 billion over the past 23 months. Despite pressure from the United States, India has maintained a neutral stance, abstaining from condemning Russia's actions at the United Nations and advocating for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Future Energy Deals and Strategic Partnerships
India is currently in discussions for a long-term oil supply deal with Russia, with Indian Oil Minister Hardeep Puri indicating that Modi's meetings in Moscow would be "very productive." As India continues to bolster its energy ties with Russia, the strategic partnership between the two nations appears to be solidifying, even as India navigates its complex relationship with the U.S. and other global powers. The BRICS summit also highlights Russia's increasing role in international relations, with Putin set to meet leaders from China, South Africa, and Egypt, further expanding his diplomatic outreach.
