BRICS Summit Kicks Off in Kazan with Global Leaders Arriving

The XVI BRICS summit commenced in Kazan, Russia, under the theme "Strengthening multilateralism for equitable global development and security." The event has attracted delegations from 36 countries, with 22 heads of state in attendance, marking a significant gathering of world leaders. Among the notable arrivals was Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose plane was escorted by a Russian fighter jet, highlighting the importance of the summit. Other leaders included Egyptian President el-Sisi, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian joining later in the day.

Upon arrival, the leaders were welcomed with traditional dishes from Russian and Tatar cuisine, including karavai and chak-chak. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov mentioned that President Vladimir Putin had prepared special gifts for the guests, showcasing the hospitality of the host nation. Prime Minister Modi expressed his enthusiasm for the summit on social media, emphasizing its importance in fostering global improvement.

Key Meetings and Discussions Among World Leaders

During the summit, Prime Minister Modi met with President Putin, where they discussed the strategic partnership between India and Russia. Modi reiterated India's commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis, indicating New Delhi's readiness to assist in achieving stability. The conversation also touched on the opening of a new Indian consulate in Kazan, which both leaders agreed would enhance bilateral relations.

Putin also held discussions with President Ramaphosa, focusing on economic cooperation and trade between Russia and South Africa. The leaders highlighted their alignment on various geopolitical issues and the importance of creating a multipolar world order. The summit is expected to address critical global and regional issues, including security, economic collaboration, and cultural exchanges, with a focus on potentially expanding BRICS to include new partner states.

As the summit unfolds from October 22 to 24, it serves as a platform for dialogue on pressing international matters, countering the narrative of Russia's isolation in the global arena. Peskov affirmed that Russia remains an integral part of international discussions, emphasizing the difficulty of isolating a nation of its stature.
