Military Expert Critiques Israeli Operations in Gaza
Retired Major General Wassef Erekat, a military and strategic expert, has raised serious allegations against the Israeli military regarding its operations in the Gaza Strip. He claims that the actions taken by the Israeli army amount to genocide and ethnic cleansing, carried out under the directives of senior leadership within the Israeli government. Erekat cites statements from Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who allegedly called for the killing of Palestinians, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has dismissed discussions of humanity and international law.
Erekat's comments come in the wake of disturbing reports and footage showing the aftermath of military operations in Gaza, including scenes of stray dogs attacking the bodies of deceased Palestinians. He noted that for over 50 days, Israeli soldiers have obstructed ambulance and civil defense teams from retrieving these bodies, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Shift in Israeli Military Strategy
The military expert pointed out a significant change in the behavior of the Israeli army, indicating that soldiers are increasingly avoiding direct confrontations with Palestinian resistance groups. Despite being equipped with advanced weaponry, the Israeli forces have reportedly shifted their focus towards targeting civilians, which Erekat attributes to a growing sense of anxiety and fear among Israeli soldiers. He highlighted the effectiveness of the Al-Qassam Brigades and Al-Quds Brigades, noting their improved military performance in various regions of Gaza, including Beit Lahia, Jabalia, and Rafah.
Erekat also discussed the internal dynamics within Israel, stating that the military, settlers, and immigrants form the foundation of the Israeli state. However, he noted that these pillars are under strain, with many settlers not returning to their homes and over a million Israelis having emigrated. This situation has reportedly left Israeli soldiers ill-prepared for urban combat, particularly in the densely populated and devastated areas of Gaza.
International Response and Accountability
The international community has begun to take notice of the allegations against Israeli leaders. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant, citing reasonable grounds for believing they committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. The court's statement highlighted the use of starvation as a weapon and other inhumane acts attributed to the Israeli leadership.
Erekat emphasized that these alleged crimes are being documented in international forums, contributing to the growing perception of Israel as a violator of human rights. He asserted that despite the challenges faced, the Palestinian resistance continues to demonstrate its capability to confront the Israeli occupation, which he believes will persist as long as military operations continue in Gaza.
