American alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin suffered a serious fall during the second run of the giant slalom at the Alpine Skiing World Cup in Killington, Vermont, on November 30, 2024. Shiffrin was on the verge of achieving her 100th career victory after dominating the first run of the race. However, she made a critical mistake on a right-hand turn, which led to her crashing headfirst into the safety nets after hitting two gates.
Following the fall, Shiffrin was transported down the slope in a medical sled and is currently undergoing tests at a local hospital. The American Ski Federation reported that she remained conscious and even inquired about her intermediate times, which provided some reassurance regarding her condition.
The victory in the giant slalom ultimately went to Swedish Olympic champion Sara Hector, while Shiffrin's participation in the upcoming slalom event remains uncertain due to her injuries.
