Federica Brignone Triumphs in Women's Giant Slalom in Sölden
Federica Brignone made a spectacular start to the 2024-2025 Alpine Skiing World Cup season by winning the Women's Giant Slalom in Sölden, Austria, on October 26, 2024. The 34-year-old Italian skier clinched her 28th career victory, solidifying her status as the most successful Italian skier in history. Brignone finished the race with a time of 2'16"06, showcasing her skill and determination on a challenging course with difficult snow conditions due to warm foehn winds.
In a thrilling competition, Brignone overcame a third-place standing after the first run, where American superstar Mikaela Shiffrin led with a time that was four-tenths of a second faster than hers. However, Shiffron's performance faltered in the second run, resulting in a fifth-place finish, more than a second behind Brignone. New Zealand's Alice Robinson secured second place with a time of 2'16"22, while Austria's Julia Scheib surprised many by taking third with a time of 2'17"13.
Brignone's victory marks her fifth career podium on the Rettenbach glacier, a venue where she previously won in 2015. This victory is an encouraging sign as she heads into a competitive season that will culminate in the World Championships in Saalbach in February 2025, a track she has already conquered in previous competitions.
