A tragic incident occurred on Thursday in New Caledonia, where a man died, likely due to drowning before being attacked by sharks. The 39-year-old man was kitesurfing off the northeast coast of Grande Terre, near Poindimié, when the accident happened, according to the Nouméa prosecutor's office.
The man, who lived in Poindimié, was out kitesurfing with a friend around 2:30 p.m. local time when he fell into the water after getting caught in the halyards of his wing. He lost consciousness and received initial help from his friend until several sharks quickly arrived. The Poindimié firefighters intervened using a boat and discovered his body.
Public prosecutor Yves Dupas stated that an investigation into the causes of death has been opened. The examination of the body concluded that the man drowned before being attacked by sharks, which tore off his lower limbs. A bite measuring 21 cm long was noted on the body.
The risk associated with sharks has significantly increased in recent years in New Caledonia, particularly in the southern regions of the big island, including the bays of Nouméa. Of the 10 shark-related deaths recorded worldwide in 2023, one occurred in New Caledonia in February.
