Operation Sheba Al-Khair: Major Smuggling Case Uncovered in Eilat
In a significant crackdown on illegal immigration, the Israel Police have arrested 15 suspects in connection with the Sheba Al-Khair smuggling case, which involved the illegal entry of residents from the West Bank into Israel. The investigation, which lasted almost a month, culminated in the apprehension of 13 illegal residents who were found in an apartment in Eilat. The police also uncovered a hidden airsoft gun and forged identity cards during the operation.
The investigation began on September 19, 2024, as part of an 'emergency braking' initiative aimed at addressing the rising concerns over illegal immigration amid heightened security threats in the region. According to the police, the suspects, including two Israeli residents of Eilat, coordinated the illegal entry of these individuals through a breach in the fence in the Jericho area. They facilitated their transport from Jerusalem to Eilat and arranged for their employment at a nearby IDF base, where they were allegedly involved in construction and renovation work.
Attorney Rotem Levy, a criminal prosecutor, highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, "At this time, when the State of Israel is under a real security threat, the presence of illegal residents poses a significant risk to public safety." The investigation revealed that the suspects used fake Israeli identity cards to gain access to the military base and even participated in safety training, underscoring the organized nature of this illegal operation.
The police emphasized that the enforcement against illegal residents is a top priority, especially given the current security climate. The investigation involved over 100 testimonies, confrontations, and investigations under caution, leading to the indictment of the suspects and a request for their detention until the end of the proceedings. This operation reflects a broader strategy to combat illegal immigration and enhance security in Israel.
