In a significant move towards enhancing urban mobility, Lyon's public transport network, TCL, will introduce a new river shuttle service called Navigône, set to commence in June 2025. This initiative, announced by Sytral Mobilités, aims to integrate the Saône river into the city's transport system, providing a fun and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional modes of transport.
Navigône will feature four electrically powered boats, serving four stops from Vaise to Confluence in just 20 minutes. These stops will include Vaise Confluence, Saint-Antoine, and Saint Vincent quays near Bellecour and Vieux Lyon. The boats, built by Océa company in Les Sables-d'Olonnes, will have a capacity of 70 passengers, with facilities for PRM and bicycle access.
The introduction of this service is part of a broader effort to revalorize the banks of the Saône, contributing to both landscape and environmental enhancements. Electric charging stations will be installed at key stops, ensuring the sustainability of the service. Initially, two thermally powered boats will provide the connections, with the first electric boats expected to be delivered in the fall of 2025.
Managed by RATP DEV and Les Yachts de Lyon, the service will be included in the TCL subscription, targeting 560,000 visitors annually. The project represents a substantial investment, with a total cost of 53.5 million euros for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the boats over a seven-year period. Additionally, 15 captains and as many sailors will be recruited to operate the shuttles.
The long-term goal is to achieve a frequency of 15 minutes during peak hours, making it a viable option for daily commuters. The service will be accessible to TCL subscribers and chargeable for others, with the pricing yet to be defined. This initiative marks a significant step towards the exploitation of Lyon's waterways, a concept often discussed in political projects over recent years.
