Man Sentenced to Five Years for Throwing Caustic Soda at Partner in Libourne
A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to five years in prison, two of which are suspended, after throwing caustic soda in his partner's face during a violent altercation in Libourne, Gironde. The incident, which occurred last Sunday, has raised serious concerns regarding domestic violence and the dangers of household chemicals.
The court heard that the victim, who had been in a relationship with the man for a year, suffered severe injuries, including hair loss from her scalp, which was “dissolved” by the caustic soda. This chemical, known for its corrosive properties, poses significant risks of skin irritation and burns, as well as potential eye damage. The victim, visibly distressed, expressed her fear and pain during the proceedings, stating, “He’s gone crazy.”
The defendant, who was in custody prior to his trial, claimed that the incident was accidental and described an escalating series of throwings between them, which included a glass of water, an egg, and vinegar. However, the prosecution characterized the act as intentional violence, leading to the man's immediate detention and subsequent sentencing.
In addition to his prison sentence, the court imposed a three-year ban on contact with the victim, a prohibition on carrying weapons, and the withdrawal of parental authority over his son. The victim, a mother of two daughters, was present during the incident, highlighting the impact of domestic violence on families.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by household products when misused and the urgent need for awareness about domestic violence. Individuals facing similar situations are encouraged to seek help and report incidents to authorities.
