Attack on Leningradets Coaches in Astrakhan: Details Emerge
The head coach of Leningradets, Vadim Yevseyev, and his assistant, Aleksandr Shmarko, were attacked in Astrakhan following their match against Volgar on November 17. The incident, which has drawn significant media attention, occurred when the coaches were returning to their hotel after dining at a restaurant. According to reports, two men approached them under the pretense of asking for a cigarette. When Yevseyev did not respond, the attackers used pepper spray on him and subsequently assaulted Shmarko with a knife, resulting in a cheek injury. Fortunately, the injuries were not life-threatening, and both coaches were treated at a local hospital.
Yevseyev confirmed the attack, stating, "They attacked me with a knife... I'm in the operating room. I can't see anything, I can't talk to you, I'm in the hospital." Shmarko, who received stitches for his injury, speculated that the attackers might have been under the influence of drugs. Despite the violent encounter, both coaches were reported to be in stable condition and later returned to St. Petersburg with their team.
Investigation and Reactions to the Incident
Following the attack, Leningradets released a statement clarifying that the incident was not related to football or the match against Volgar. The club emphasized that it was a regular crime and expressed confidence in the law enforcement's ability to handle the situation. The attackers, both young men born in 2002 and 2003, were quickly apprehended by the police and charged with hooliganism, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to seven years. One of the assailants admitted to his actions, expressing remorse and acknowledging his guilt.
The incident has prompted a wave of support from the football community, with Volgar and Fakel both extending their wishes for a speedy recovery to Yevseyev and Shmarko.
