Displacement Crisis in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley Amid Escalating Conflict
In the wake of intense Israeli bombardment, thousands of families in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley are facing a dire humanitarian crisis. Displaced from their homes, residents recount harrowing experiences as they seek refuge from the escalating violence. Umm Yasser, a mother from Nahle, described her desperate escape: "They were indescribable nightmarish moments. All we wished for was to escape... escape to a safe place." With her children in tow, she left behind everything familiar in search of safety, now residing with two other families in a rented house in Baabda.
The ongoing conflict has forced many families to abandon their homes as the Israeli military escalates its operations, claiming to target Hezbollah positions. The latest wave of violence has seen attacks spread beyond southern Lebanon, reaching the Bekaa region, which has plunged into chaos and destruction. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reports that at least 262 people have died, with over 731 injured since the onset of this military escalation.
As the bombardment continues, the Bekaa Valley, known for its agricultural richness and strategic location, has become a scene of devastation. Residents describe the sound of air raids and the sight of destruction as terrifying. The governor of the Bekaa, Judge Kamal Abu Joudeh, highlighted the tragic loss of life, including a recent incident where 19 members of the Al-Shuaib family were killed in Karak. This has led to a significant increase in displacement, with many families fleeing to Zahle and Beirut in search of safety.
Currently, there are approximately 97 open shelters in the Bekaa region, housing about 13,000 registered displaced individuals. However, this number does not account for those who have sought refuge in homes or hotels, suggesting that the actual figures could be much higher. Local authorities are striving to provide essential supplies like food, water, and hygiene products to those affected, but the situation remains challenging as resources dwindle.
