Popular Markets Provide Refuge for Displaced Families in Bekaa

In the Bekaa region of Lebanon, the popular market in Marj has become a vital resource for displaced families fleeing the ongoing Israeli aggression. Every Monday, this market draws thousands of visitors, including many displaced individuals seeking affordable clothing and food. Among them is Zahra Omar, who expressed her struggles due to the economic collapse exacerbated by the violence, stating, “Here we find what we need at reasonable prices.”

The market serves not only the local Lebanese community but also over half a million Syrian refugees who have settled in the Bekaa due to the Syrian crisis. Many families, like that of Ali Daher, have left their homes under duress, often without essential belongings or identification documents. The harsh reality of displacement has led to increased reliance on the Marj market, which offers goods at prices that are significantly lower than traditional stores, making it a crucial economic outlet amid Lebanon's severe economic crisis.

The Economic Impact of Displacement on Local Markets

Mayor Munawwar al-Jarrah highlighted the dire economic conditions faced by both the local population and displaced individuals. He noted that the Marj market has become a sanctuary for those struggling to secure basic necessities, as it offers competitive pricing on food, clothing, and household items. The market, established in the early 20th century, has seen its visitor numbers soar from about 10,000 to nearly 20,000 since the escalation of violence, reflecting the urgent need for affordable resources among the displaced.

As the conflict escalates, the market has witnessed unprecedented demand, particularly for winter clothing and essential supplies. Haitham Qassim Saleh, an investor in the market, pointed out that many other local markets have been damaged or destroyed due to ongoing attacks, pushing more displaced families to seek refuge in Marj. This influx has resulted in a significant uptick in sales, with some vendors reporting that their sales have doubled as families prioritize their immediate needs.

Despite the support from relief organizations, the demand for goods remains high, as many families struggle to meet their basic needs. Visitors like Zuhair Al-Shammari emphasize the market's importance, noting that prices can be up to 50% lower than elsewhere, making it an essential resource for those in dire economic situations. The market's diverse offerings include food, clothing, and winter supplies, all crucial for families preparing for the colder months ahead.
