Catastrophic Conditions at Kamal Adwan Hospital
Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has described the situation as catastrophic amid ongoing Israeli attacks. The hospital is facing a severe health crisis, exacerbated by a complete siege that restricts the entry of essential medical supplies, fuel, and personnel. Dr. Abu Safiya indicated that the hospital is overwhelmed with a daily influx of between 50 to 70 injured individuals, far exceeding its capacity, which primarily serves women and children. The lack of surgical tools and medical specialties has forced medical staff to make difficult decisions regarding patient care, prioritizing those with a higher chance of survival.
Severe Shortages and Targeted Attacks
The hospital is currently experiencing a staggering 60% shortage of medical personnel and has reported direct attacks on ambulances, complicating efforts to transport the wounded. Dr. Abu Safiya noted that two ambulances were attacked recently, rendering them inoperable. The hospital has received approximately 250 martyrs and 600 wounded individuals, with many more unable to reach the facility due to ongoing violence and lack of coordination with Israeli authorities. The dire conditions have led to an urgent appeal for international medical assistance, particularly in surgical specialties that are critically lacking.
International Response and Humanitarian Concerns
Despite the overwhelming need, international organizations, including the Red Cross, have been criticized for their limited intervention. Dr. Abu Safiya expressed frustration with the lack of support, stating that the organization has not effectively coordinated assistance for the health system in northern Gaza. While the World Health Organization has provided some help, the overall response remains inadequate given the scale of the humanitarian crisis. The director's urgent calls for medical delegations to assist in the stricken region highlight the dire need for immediate international intervention.
