JR's Monumental Transformation of the Pont-Neuf
In a remarkable artistic endeavor, the Pont-Neuf, Paris's oldest bridge, is set to undergo a transformation into a 'cave' in September 2025. This ambitious project, led by renowned French street artist JR, pays homage to the iconic duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who famously wrapped the bridge in fabric 40 years ago. The Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation announced that the installation will be open to the public for two weeks, showcasing JR's vision of large rock formations that will temporarily connect the Seine's right and left banks.
The project aims to create a visually stunning installation that can be appreciated both day and night, drawing inspiration from the quarries that provided the stones used in constructing the city. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has expressed her support for this initiative, calling it a 'gift to Paris' that will be funded through private contributions. JR, known for his large-scale ephemeral collages, has gained international acclaim for his innovative art, making this project a highly anticipated event in the Parisian art scene.
