Jordan's Stance on Regional Stability
King Abdullah II of Jordan has emphasized the critical need for a comprehensive truce to prevent a potential regional war, particularly in light of escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. During a meeting with a delegation from the US Congress, the King asserted that Jordan will not become a battlefield, prioritizing the safety of its citizens. He called for intensified international efforts to halt the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which he believes is a catalyst for broader instability in the region.
The Urgency of a Ceasefire
The Jordanian monarch highlighted the dangers posed by extremist settler attacks against Palestinians and violations of religious sanctities in Jerusalem. He reiterated the importance of a political solution based on the two-state framework, which he views as essential for ensuring peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis. Furthermore, he stressed the necessity of supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to fulfill its humanitarian mission for millions of Palestinians affected by the ongoing conflict.
Jordan's Firm Defense Posture
Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Al-Safadi reinforced the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its airspace, stating that any threats from Iran or Israel would be met with decisive action. Amid rising fears of military escalation, including Iran's recent missile launches towards Israel, Jordan has vowed to intercept any aerial incursions that threaten its sovereignty. The escalating violence in Gaza, which has resulted in significant casualties, further complicates the already tense geopolitical landscape.
