Jordan's King Abdullah II Warns of Potential Regional War
In a significant meeting with Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Jordan's King Abdullah II expressed grave concerns about the escalating conflict in Lebanon and its potential to ignite a wider regional war. During their discussion in Amman, King Abdullah emphasized that the ongoing Israeli aggression in Lebanon could have catastrophic consequences for the entire region. He stated that the continuation of these hostilities would be 'very costly for everyone' involved, urging for immediate efforts to halt the violence.
The Royal Court's statement highlighted Jordan's unwavering support for Lebanon, its sovereignty, and its stability. King Abdullah reiterated Jordan's commitment to assist the Lebanese people, particularly in light of the humanitarian crisis resulting from the ongoing conflict. The Kingdom has already mobilized resources, sending nine planes loaded with 140 tons of essential supplies, including food and medical aid, to alleviate the suffering of those displaced by the violence.
Prime Minister Mikati acknowledged Jordan's critical support during these challenging times, particularly praising the establishment of an air bridge between Amman and Beirut to deliver much-needed relief supplies. This collaboration underscores the importance of regional solidarity in addressing the humanitarian impacts of conflict.
The backdrop of this meeting is the significant escalation of violence in Lebanon and Gaza, particularly since September 23, 2023. Israel's military operations have intensified, leading to airstrikes in various regions of Lebanon, including the capital, Beirut. In response, Hezbollah has been actively engaging military targets, resulting in a complex and dangerous situation that could spiral out of control if not addressed urgently.
