Joe Marler Issues Apology for Haka Comments
In a recent social media uproar, England rugby player Joe Marler faced backlash after labeling the New Zealand haka as "ridiculous" and suggesting it should be banned before matches. Two days later, on November 1, 2024, Marler took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his regret, clarifying that his comments were not made with malicious intent. He stated, "I just wanted to see the restrictions lifted to allow for a response without penalty," referencing the rules that prevent opposing teams from crossing the halfway line during the haka performance.
Marler's comments had sparked a strong reaction from New Zealand fans and players, including Stade Français scrum-half Brad Weber, who compared Marler's remarks to historical colonial attitudes. Marler acknowledged the importance of the haka in New Zealand culture, stating, "I am grateful for the education I have received on the importance of the haka in New Zealand culture and I hope others will also have a better understanding."
The England prop, who has 95 caps for his national team, expressed disappointment in his original tweet, calling it a "flippant attempt to spark a debate" that ultimately fell flat. He emphasized the need for better communication regarding cultural practices in rugby. As the England team prepares to clash with the All Blacks at Twickenham on Saturday, Marler, who will miss the match due to a foot injury, predicts a six-point victory for his side.
