Severe Storm Devastates Emilia-Romagna and Marche Regions in Italy
A catastrophic storm has struck the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche, resulting in severe flooding and mass evacuations. The coastal cities of Ravenna and Ancona have been particularly hard-hit, with over 350 millimeters of rain falling in just 48 hours. Cyclone Boris is responsible for this unprecedented weather event, leading to the evacuation of more than a thousand residents, primarily around Ravenna, where many popular beaches are located.
The Lamone River has breached a dam in Traversara di Bagnacavallo, causing extensive flooding. Rescuers have been deployed using helicopters to save individuals trapped on rooftops, and two people have been reported missing, according to Italy's Deputy Minister of Transport, Galeazzo Bignami. The situation remains dire, with evacuation orders issued for entire districts in Ravenna as the waters continue to rise.
Criticism and Calls for Emergency Measures
In the wake of the disaster, criticism has emerged regarding the flood management in Emilia-Romagna, particularly after the region suffered severe flooding in spring 2023. Residents have voiced frustration over the lack of preventive measures, claiming that riverbeds have not been adequately cleared despite the flow of funding. Some argue that climate change is exacerbating these events, suggesting that the current floods are a manifestation of a broader climate crisis.
As the rains are expected to persist until Friday, the civil defense has extended the red alert for the region, indicating that conditions remain critical. Emergency services, including over 260 firefighters, are actively responding to the situation, with numerous landslides reported in the Bologna area and train services suspended across five railway lines due to flooding. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and heed evacuation orders as they continue to monitor the situation closely.
