Escalating Tensions: Israeli Attacks on UNIFIL Forces in Lebanon
In a significant escalation of hostilities, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have targeted United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) positions, resulting in injuries to two soldiers stationed at the UNIFIL headquarters in Naqura. The incident, which occurred on October 10, 2024, involved an IDF Merkava tank firing at an observation tower within the UNIFIL compound, causing injuries that, while serious enough to require hospitalization, were fortunately not life-threatening.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy condemned the attacks as "unacceptable," emphasizing that the UN and Italy do not take orders from Israel. This statement came after Italy's Defense Minister Guido Crosetto summoned Israel's ambassador to express the country's outrage. Italy contributes the largest contingent to UNIFIL, with approximately 1,200 soldiers deployed in the region.
The UNIFIL spokesman, Andrea Tenenti, confirmed that the IDF also targeted another UN position, hitting the entrance to a bunker where Italian peacekeepers were sheltering. The ongoing violence in southern Lebanon has raised serious concerns among the international community, including the European Union and the United States, both of which have called for the protection of UN personnel.
International Reactions and Ongoing Conflict
The situation remains precarious as fighting continues between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants in southern Lebanon. The IDF reported killing two Hezbollah commanders and striking weapon depots in Beirut, while Hezbollah claims to have targeted Israeli tanks along the border. The civilian toll has been devastating, with local authorities reporting over 2,169 deaths and more than 10,000 injuries since the onset of hostilities.
In response to the attacks on UNIFIL, a video conference is being organized by Italy and France to discuss the situation among European nations participating in the mission. UNIFIL has reiterated the necessity for all parties to respect the safety and security of its personnel, highlighting that any attack on peacekeeping forces constitutes a serious violation of international law and Security Council Resolution 1701.
As tensions escalate, the international community watches closely, urging all involved to de-escalate and adhere to their commitments under international law.
