Israeli Forces Burn Schools in Jabalia Amid Ongoing Conflict
On October 21, 2024, the Israeli occupation forces burned down a school in Jabalia, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict in the northern Gaza Strip. This incident is part of a larger operation that has seen three schools set ablaze in just two days, including Kuwait, Aleppo, and Hamad schools, which serve as vital educational institutions in the area. The attacks are reportedly carried out by the Givati 432 Battalion, highlighting the intense military actions in regions populated by civilians.
The destruction of educational facilities is alarming, particularly as these schools have become makeshift shelters for displaced individuals fleeing from relentless bombing campaigns. According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, since October 2023, over 120 schools and universities have been completely destroyed, with an additional 332 suffering partial damage. The Ministry of Health in Gaza recently reported a massacre at the Abu Hussein school, which was housing thousands of displaced people, further emphasizing the dire circumstances in Jabalia.
Humanitarian Crisis Intensifies
The humanitarian situation in Jabalia is deteriorating rapidly. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stated that approximately 100,000 residents are trapped under siege, with no supplies reaching the area for three weeks. Eyewitness accounts from paramedic Nevin Al-Dawasah reveal that the Israeli army's bombings have not allowed sufficient time for civilians to evacuate, resulting in tragic casualties, including the deaths of ten individuals and injuries to over thirty, predominantly children.
Al Jazeera's coverage of the situation shows residents desperately recovering bodies from the streets of Jabalia al-Balad camp, highlighting the severe impact of the Israeli shelling. Reports indicate that civilians, including children, are being targeted while attempting to access basic necessities such as water. The ongoing conflict, supported by significant American backing, has led to over 142,000 Palestinian casualties, with thousands more missing amid widespread destruction and famine affecting the population, particularly vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.
