Israeli Attacks Force Closure of Hospitals in Southern Lebanon
In a devastating escalation of violence, several hospitals in southern Lebanon have been forced to temporarily close due to direct targeting by Israeli forces. The ongoing military confrontations between Hezbollah and Israel have severely damaged the medical infrastructure, leaving hospitals in Marjeyoun, Mays al-Jabal, and Bint Jbeil unable to operate. The Lebanese Ministry of Health has reported significant casualties among medical staff, highlighting the grave risks faced by healthcare workers in the region.
Impact on Medical Services and Healthcare Workers
The targeting of medical facilities is not only a humanitarian crisis but also a significant challenge to the healthcare system in Lebanon. The director of Marjeyoun Governmental Hospital, Dr. Mounes Kalakash, stated that the hospital had to evacuate its staff and patients to ensure their safety after repeated attacks on ambulance crews. The hospital had been functioning under extreme pressure, providing care despite shortages of medical supplies and personnel. The recent attacks have left the hospital unable to receive or transport any injured individuals, further exacerbating the health crisis in the region.
Ongoing Challenges for Remaining Operational Hospitals
Other hospitals, like Hasbaya Governmental Hospital, continue to operate but face overwhelming challenges. Dr. Samah Al-Baytar reported that while the hospital remains open to treat patients, including displaced individuals, it suffers from a severe shortage of essential medications and supplies, including chemotherapy drugs. The hospital is relying on pre-purchased supplies, but these are rapidly depleting. Additionally, logistical challenges such as water shortages and communication disruptions complicate the delivery of care. Despite these hardships, healthcare workers remain dedicated to their mission, underscoring the resilience of Lebanon's medical community in the face of adversity.
