Israel Halts Administrative Detention Orders for Settlers in the West Bank
In a significant policy shift, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz announced on November 22, 2024, that he would cease issuing administrative detention warrants against Jewish settlers accused of violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. This marks a historic first, as Katz, known for his hard-line stance, is the first defense minister to take such a position. The decision follows a meeting with Shin Bet security service head Ronen Bar, where Katz requested the development of alternative measures to address violence in the region.
Katz justified his decision by citing the serious threats faced by Jewish settlers from Palestinian groups, claiming that the current security climate necessitates a different approach. Administrative detention, typically based on undisclosed evidence of serious crimes, has been a controversial tool used against settlers involved in violent acts, including murder and arson. However, the recent escalation of attacks by settlers against Palestinians has raised concerns among various factions within Israel.
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions. Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir praised the decision, calling it a significant step forward. Conversely, former Israeli Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot warned that this could lead to increased violence and instability in the region. The Israeli Peace Now movement condemned the decision, labeling it as support for what they term 'Jewish terrorism.' Arab Israeli Knesset member Ahmed Tibi echoed these sentiments, criticizing the government for enabling violence against Palestinians.
As tensions rise, several Western nations, including the United States and the European Union, have imposed sanctions on settlers and settlement organizations for their actions against Palestinian civilians. This policy change by the Israeli government could further complicate the already volatile situation in the West Bank.
