Israel Releases Video of Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar Days Before October 7 Attack
The Israeli military has released a controversial video showing Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, in a tunnel in the Gaza Strip, purportedly just hours before the attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. The footage, which has sparked significant reactions, features Sinwar alongside his family, including his wife and two children, as they navigate through the underground complex that appears to be stocked with supplies. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, an Israeli army spokesperson, stated that the video was recorded on the evening of October 6, emphasizing that Sinwar and his family were preparing for an extended stay underground with provisions such as food, water, and even a plasma TV.
Hagari remarked, "They stay alone for hours. Sinwar and his son go up and down with food, water, pillows, a plasma TV screen, mattresses and other things for a long stay," indicating the level of preparation that was taking place before the violent events of October 7.
The Death of Yahya Sinwar and Its Implications for Hamas
Yahya Sinwar, who has been described as the architect of the October 7 attack, was reported dead by Israeli authorities on Thursday, having been killed in a firefight with soldiers in Rafah, southern Gaza. An autopsy confirmed he died from a gunshot wound to the head. His death represents a significant blow to Hamas, which has faced severe challenges following the outbreak of war in Gaza after the attack. The organization, previously characterized by a strong hierarchical structure, is now perceived as weakened and decapitated following the loss of its leadership figures, including Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in July 2023. The Israeli military has also released footage of tank fire directed at a building believed to be harboring Sinwar, further illustrating the intense military actions taking place in the region.
