Israel Expands Ground Offensive in Southern Lebanon Amid Escalating Conflict

Tensions in the Middle East have reached a boiling point as Israel intensifies its ground offensive against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Military expert, retired Major General Fayez Al-Duwairi, highlighted that the Israeli army has expanded its operations along the border following the deployment of the newly formed 146th Division. This marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, with the operational line now stretching 80 kilometers from Kfar Kila to Naqoura. Al-Duwairi noted that the Israeli forces are aiming to establish a foothold in the region, which is crucial for mobilization and launching further operations against Hezbollah.

On October 7, Israel commenced targeted ground operations against Hezbollah, coinciding with the first anniversary of Hamas' deadly attack on Israeli territory. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue the fight until victory against Hezbollah and Hamas is achieved. Despite significant losses among their leadership, both groups have continued to retaliate with rocket attacks, with Hezbollah reportedly launching over a hundred rockets towards Haifa and surrounding areas.

Hezbollah's Response and the Call for Ceasefire

In response to the Israeli offensive, Hezbollah has maintained its military capabilities, asserting that it can still launch a substantial number of rockets into Israeli territory. Naim Qassem, Hezbollah's deputy secretary-general, indicated that the group is well-organized and capable despite the ongoing Israeli strikes. He also expressed support for political efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire, led by Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.

The conflict has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis, with over 2,000 casualties reported in Lebanon and more than a million displaced. As the situation escalates, the international community continues to call for restraint and a resolution to the violence that has engulfed both Israel and Lebanon.
