Tensions Rise as Israel Condemns Spain's Recognition of Palestinian State
The diplomatic relationship between Israel and Spain has experienced significant strain following Spain's recognition of the Palestinian state. Israel's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Israel Katz, reacted strongly to the decision, which was announced by Spain, Ireland, and Norway and took effect last Tuesday. In addition to the provocative social media post, Katz announced punitive measures against Spain. Effective June 1, the Spanish consulate in Jerusalem will be forbidden from providing services to Palestinians. Katz justified these measures by emphasizing that Israel would not tolerate attacks on its sovereignty and security.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez defended the recognition of the Palestinian state, calling it a necessity for achieving peace between Israelis and Palestinians and framing it as a matter of historic justice for the Palestinian people. This move was seen positively by pro-Palestinian factions but drew ire from pro-Israel supporters.
