Iran Rejects Accusations of Involvement in Trump's Assassination Attempt
Iran has vehemently denied allegations of its involvement in the recent assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump. Tehran's mission to the United Nations labeled the claims as 'unfounded and malicious.' The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanani, stated that there are 'malign political objectives' behind such accusations. He reiterated that while Iran seeks justice for the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani through legal means, it has never been involved in any armed attack against Trump.
Increased Security Measures for Trump
Following the attack, the US Secret Service has intensified security measures around Trump. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) described the incident as an assassination attempt. The attack, which occurred during a rally in Pennsylvania, resulted in Trump being injured in his right ear. The gunman, who managed to position himself on a rooftop overlooking the rally, also killed one attendee and wounded two others. The Secret Service has faced severe criticism for its failure to prevent the attack, leading to an independent investigation ordered by President Joe Biden.
The Ongoing Tensions Between the US and Iran
The attack on Trump has reignited concerns about Iranian retaliation for the assassination of Soleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad in January 2020. White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson emphasized that the US has been tracking Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years. These threats are seen as stemming from Iran's desire for revenge. Despite the heightened security and ongoing investigations, the White House has stated that there are no indications that the shooter had any foreign or American associates.
