Iran's Alleged Assassination Plot Against Trump
Recent reports have revealed that US intelligence agencies had received information about an Iranian plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump. Despite increased security measures by the Secret Service, an assassination attempt occurred during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, where Trump sustained a minor ear injury. One attendee was killed, and two others were seriously injured. The alleged plot is believed to be in retaliation for the US killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
Secret Service Under Scrutiny
The Secret Service has come under intense criticism following the assassination attempt. Despite being alerted to the potential threat weeks in advance, the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, managed to position himself on a rooftop approximately 150 meters from the rally. This lapse has led to questions about the effectiveness of the security measures in place. President Joe Biden has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident, and Congress is also scrutinizing the Secret Service's actions.
Iran's Denial and Legal Pursuit
Iran has vehemently denied any involvement in the assassination attempt on Trump. The Iranian mission to the UN described the allegations as 'baseless and malicious,' asserting that Iran seeks to bring Trump to justice through legal means for the assassination of General Soleimani. Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani reiterated Iran's stance on pursuing the issue legally, emphasizing that Trump should be tried and punished in a court of law.
