Iran Launches Major Missile Attack on Israel, Escalating Tensions in the Middle East
In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Iran launched approximately 180 missiles at Israel, marking a significant retaliation for the recent assassinations of key figures in the region, including leaders from Hamas and Hezbollah. This unprecedented attack was characterized by Iranian officials as a 'decisive response' to Israeli aggression, particularly following the deaths of Ismail Haniyeh, Hassan Nasrallah, and Abbas Nilforoushan.
Former Iranian diplomat Hadi Afghi disclosed to Al Jazeera that 80% of the missiles successfully hit their targets, specifically targeting strategic sites such as the Nevatim air base, which houses advanced F-35 fighter jets. He emphasized that Iran's missile technology, including radar-evading Fateh missiles, has proven effective against Israeli defense systems like the Iron Dome.
The Israeli military responded swiftly, labeling the missile barrage a 'serious and dangerous escalation.' Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the Israeli military, warned of imminent consequences and affirmed that Israel would retaliate at a time of its choosing. In the aftermath of the attack, two minor injuries were reported in Israel, alongside one fatality in Jericho, West Bank, attributed to shrapnel from the missiles.
In a show of solidarity, the United States reaffirmed its support for Israel, with President Joe Biden emphasizing the need for coordination in response efforts. The attack has heightened fears of a broader conflict in the region, as tensions have been escalating since the onset of the war between Israel and Hamas in October 2023.
As the situation develops, Iranian officials have indicated that while the current operation has concluded, further strikes could be imminent, especially if Israel continues its military actions against Iranian interests. The geopolitical landscape remains volatile, with both nations preparing for potential further confrontations.
