Iran Condemns Israel's Admission of Haniyeh's Assassination
Iran has strongly condemned Israel's recent admission of responsibility for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, labeling it as a 'heinous crime.' This statement comes after Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz publicly acknowledged Israel's role in the assassination during a press conference. Haniyeh was killed on July 31, 2024, when an explosive device was reportedly planted by Israeli agents at his residence in Tehran. Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, expressed outrage over the admission, stating that it marks the first time Israel has openly accepted responsibility for such an act. He emphasized that this acknowledgment validates Iran's missile strikes against Israel, which occurred in retaliation for Haniyeh's assassination.
In his letter to the UN Secretary-General, Irvani asserted that Israel's actions pose a significant threat to regional and international peace. He referenced Iran's missile attack on October 1, 2024, which involved firing 200 missiles at Israel, claiming that the attack was a justified defensive response to Haniyeh's assassination. Despite Iran's claims, Israel reported that most of the missiles were intercepted by its air defense systems. The tensions escalated further with Israel's subsequent assassinations of key figures in Hezbollah and Hamas, including Hassan Nasrallah and Yahya Sinwar, indicating a broader conflict in the region.
