Rising Tensions in Lebanon Prompt International Evacuations
As violence escalates in Lebanon, particularly due to intense Israeli air strikes, international governments are urging their citizens to evacuate. The British government has announced the deployment of 700 troops to Cyprus to facilitate the evacuation of British nationals trapped in Lebanon. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "It is absolutely vital that they hear my message, which is to leave immediately."
The conflict has already resulted in over 600 deaths and left approximately 2,000 wounded, with 90,000 people displaced within Lebanon. Many are seeking refuge in schools and government buildings in Beirut as the situation deteriorates. The Israeli military's actions have raised fears of further instability in the Middle East, particularly as the region grapples with ongoing tensions related to the Gaza Strip.
In addition to the UK, other nations including the United States, Australia, South Korea, and Canada have also issued warnings to their citizens in Lebanon, urging them to leave while commercial flights are still operational. White House National Security Spokesman John Kirby echoed these sentiments, advising Americans to evacuate promptly. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Canadian officials have similarly stressed the need for their citizens to depart Lebanon quickly as air traffic may cease due to the escalating violence.
