Explore how AI is transforming the PC industry with powerful new computing capabilities, driving global semiconductor investments, and enhancing productivity through innovative applications.

Transforming the PC Industry with Artificial Intelligence

In early 2024, Microsoft announced the first change to its keyboards in almost 30 years: the inclusion of a key specifically designed to activate the Windows artificial intelligence (AI) assistant. This shift symbolizes a larger trend where AI is becoming deeply integrated into personal computers, setting the stage for the ongoing evolution of the industry. A prime demonstration of this trend is the focus on AI at Computex 2024, the world's most significant computer fair held in Taipei, Taiwan. The event, boasting 1,500 exhibitors and 50,000 attendees globally, has become a hotspot for technological giants such as AMD, Qualcomm, Intel, ASUS, and Nvidia to showcase their latest innovations.

“Artificial intelligence is our number one priority, and we are at the beginning of an incredibly exciting time for the industry,” stated Lisa Su, President and CEO of AMD, during the keynote speech at Computex. Computex has cemented itself as a pivotal platform where the future of computing is being shaped. James CF Huang, President of the Council for the Development of Foreign Trade of Taiwan (TAITRA), which has invited media outlets such as El País to the event, underlined the rapid evolution of computing, emphasizing AI's potential to revolutionize the industry much like the shift from mobile phones to smartphones.

The Rise of AI-Driven Computing Power

The significant evolution within computer components highlights the surge in AI adoption. As Germán Guerra, director of ASUS OP in Spain, points out, preparing a computer for AI involves ensuring greater power and processing capacity. Computers with AI integrate a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), a specialized processor designed to manage heavy and continuous AI workloads while consuming low power. AMD's new AMD Ryzen AI 300 processor, showcased at Computex, exemplifies this advancement by achieving 50 billion operations per second, illustrating the exponential growth in processing capabilities necessary for AI applications.

Semiconductor production has become a critical focus area, likened to how oil dictated geopolitical relationships in the past. Companies like Intel are investing extensively in new factories across Europe and America to meet the ever-growing demand for chips. Walter Riviera, Intel's AI technology leader for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, noted that 80% of advanced semiconductors are manufactured in Asia, making the supply chain vulnerable. By decentralizing production, Intel and other companies aim to mitigate potential supply disruptions, ensuring a stable market for semiconductor supplies.

The integration of AI across PCs extends benefits but may also lead to increased device pricing. An HP spokesperson highlighted that enhanced hardware development and specialized software inclusion might elevate costs. However, economies of scale and better manufacturing processes are expected to eventually drive prices down.

A clear testament to the industry's commitment to AI is the introduction of the Copilot+ PC category, featuring systems designed to run AI workloads locally rather than relying heavily on cloud services. The Copilot+ devices, developed in collaboration with companies such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, come equipped with neural engines that perform up to 20 times more powerfully and 100 times more efficiently.

AI is poised to revolutionize work and home PC usage, significantly enhancing productivity by automating repetitive tasks, improving decision-making through advanced analysis, and heightening collaboration via AI-based virtual assistants. As highlighted in the HP Work Relationship Index, 81% of Spanish business leaders anticipate that AI will simplify their work processes. Furthermore, AI's potential extends to advanced security, detecting threats, and safeguarding business data.

In terms of everyday application, AI promises to enhance user experiences in audiovisual editing, file management, and privacy settings. Features such as the ASUS Vivobook S 15's Adaptive Lock, which locks the screen when the user steps away, demonstrate practical implementations. Moreover, AI can personalize home environments based on individual preferences, providing technical support around the clock.

Voice commands are set to become a prevalent mode of interaction with PCs, supplementing traditional input methods like keyboards and mice. AI developments are moving towards enabling more natural communication, with devices fully responsive to voice commands for performing tasks such as adjusting settings, launching applications, searching online, and managing media playback.

  • Other significant developments in AI across technology were highlighted at various industry events. Canva introduced new AI tools like Magic Resize and Magic Switch to streamline design processes. Google unveiled a new visual profile for eCommerce brands, enhancing product presentation through AI-powered features.
  • Meta's new AI tool focuses on simplifying marketing material creation, leveraging generative AI to produce personalized texts and images. TikTok has rolled out new tools aimed at boosting advertisement performance, combining human creativity with AI efficiency through its Symphony feature.
  • Innovations also spread to practical applications in sales and customer engagement. The Israeli company CONNECTOP has developed an advanced AI system for WhatsApp, enabling smart and efficient customer interactions, sales, and service delivery through a responsive AI-based sales representative.
