The Legacy of Signal Troops in the Great Patriotic War
To commemorate the 105th anniversary of the Signal Corps, the Russian Defense Ministry has unveiled a multimedia section titled “Always in Touch” on its website. This initiative highlights the vital role of signal troops during the Great Patriotic War, where over 1 million military signalmen contributed significantly to the victory over Nazism. The section features official correspondence, unit files, award documents, and personal accounts, including the autobiography of Marshal Ivan Peresypkin, a key figure in military communications.
Signal troops were crucial in maintaining stable communications for command and control during the war. Their efforts included delivering operational information and combat orders to units in the field. Peresypkin’s leadership was pivotal in addressing the communication challenges faced by the Red Army, especially during the initial defeats of the war. He advocated for the training of radio operators and the establishment of communication networks, which were essential for effective military operations.
Heroic Acts of Signalmen
The contributions of signalmen extended beyond routine tasks; they performed acts of extraordinary bravery under fire. The Russian Defense Ministry’s new section also documents numerous heroic deeds, including those of Nikolai Novikov and Viktor Yatsenevich, who lost their lives while ensuring communication lines remained operational. Their stories reflect the dedication and sacrifice of signal troops who, despite facing grave dangers, played a critical role in the success of military operations. The ministry emphasizes that the legacy of these heroes continues to inspire current servicemen engaged in modern military operations.
