Growing Criticism of Joe Biden's 2024 Presidential Candidacy
US President Joe Biden faces mounting criticism regarding his plans to run for re-election in the 2024 presidential race. The backlash is not only from within his Democratic Party but also from influential Hollywood figures and major donors. According to a survey conducted by ABC News and the Washington Post, two-thirds of Americans believe Biden, who will turn 82 shortly after the election, should step aside. This sentiment is echoed by 56% of Democrats, who think Biden's age and recent performance issues make him an unsuitable candidate.
Hollywood and Major Donors Turn Against Biden
The criticism has reached Hollywood, traditionally a liberal stronghold. Prominent figures like George Clooney and Rob Reiner have publicly called for Biden to withdraw. Clooney's op-ed in the New York Times described Biden's fight against time as unwinnable. Additionally, reports have surfaced that a wealthy Disney heiress plans to withhold financial support for the Democratic Party unless Biden steps down. The New York Times also indicated that a growing number of major donors are seeking a replacement candidate.
The Democratic leadership is also showing signs of wavering support. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have made statements that suggest they are open to alternative candidates. Pelosi's comments on 'Morning Joe' seemed to subtly encourage Biden to reconsider his candidacy, a significant shift given her influential position in the party.
Polls and Swing States: The Decisive Factors
Despite the growing calls for his withdrawal, Biden remains defiant. His team argues that the debate has not significantly altered the polls, although recent surveys show Biden and Trump tied at 46% each. More crucial are the numbers from swing states, where Trump appears to have gained an edge since the debate.
Vice-President Kamala Harris is seen as a stronger candidate against Trump, with polls showing her leading 49% to 47%. This has led some Democrats to consider her as a viable alternative. However, Biden has secured the necessary delegate votes in the primaries, and any withdrawal would have to be voluntary.
Biden plans to address these concerns in an upcoming TV interview with NBC journalist Lester Holt. His performance at the NATO summit in Washington this week and the subsequent press conference could be pivotal in determining his future in the race. Biden has stated that only divine intervention could make him withdraw, underscoring his determination to stay in the race despite the mounting pressure.
