Hezbollah's Ground Strategy: Cumulative Deterrence and Promising Outcomes
In the ongoing conflict in southern Lebanon, military experts are observing promising developments for Hezbollah against the Israeli army. Major General Fayez Al-Duwairi noted that Hezbollah is employing a strategy of cumulative deterrence, which is designed to build a formidable defense over time. As the Israeli army mobilizes nine brigades, equivalent to three military divisions, including the 98th and 36th divisions, Hezbollah is prepared with a defensive plan tailored to the unique geography of the region.
Al-Duwairi emphasized that Hezbollah's ability to adapt its tactics to the terrain and the enemy’s strategies has been crucial. The fighting ranges from close-quarters to longer distances, and Hezbollah's effective use of weapons, including missile strikes and anti-tank missiles, has been highlighted. The Israeli army has reported significant losses, including the deaths of eight soldiers, three of whom were officers, indicating the intensity of the clashes and the skill of Hezbollah fighters. The destruction of three Israeli Merkava tanks by Hezbollah during the advance towards Maroun al-Ras further underscores the resilience of Hezbollah's defense.
The Impact of Regional Dynamics and Strategic Goals
Military expert Elias Hanna pointed out that Hezbollah's Radwan Force has been specifically targeting Israeli units, such as the Egoz unit of the 98th Division, which specializes in guerrilla warfare. Hanna believes that Hezbollah's strategy is not only about immediate tactical gains but also about establishing a long-term deterrent against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He noted that recent Iranian missile attacks on Israel have shifted the strategic landscape, reminding Netanyahu of the complexities involved in the region.
Despite the ongoing conflict, Hanna asserts that Netanyahu's strategic objectives in Gaza and Lebanon remain unchanged, as Israel continues to push for the Lebanese population to avoid certain areas. The overarching goal appears to be destabilizing Lebanon by targeting Hezbollah and its infrastructure, which could have significant implications for the region's stability.
