Global Airlines Suspend Flights Amid Escalating Conflict in Israel and Lebanon
As tensions rise in the Middle East, particularly between Hezbollah and Israel, several global airlines have taken precautionary measures by suspending flights to affected regions. The conflict has intensified following airstrikes that resulted in significant casualties, including 37 deaths and over 3,250 injuries in Lebanon alone. The situation escalated with a deadly airstrike on southern Beirut, claiming the lives of 45 individuals, including civilians and a key Hezbollah leader.
In light of these developments, numerous airlines have announced changes to their flight schedules. For instance, Air Algerie has suspended all flights to and from Lebanon indefinitely. Meanwhile, Air France and KLM have halted services to Beirut and Tel Aviv, with Air France extending cancellations until at least September 24. Similarly, Cathay Pacific has cancelled all flights to Tel Aviv until March 2025, and Delta Airlines has suspended its New York-Tel Aviv route until the end of the year.
Other airlines, such as easyJet and Ryanair, have also suspended flights to Tel Aviv, with easyJet planning to resume operations in March 2025. The Lufthansa Group has announced the suspension of all flights to Tel Aviv and Tehran until September 24, while flights to Beirut will remain suspended until October 26.
Additionally, United Airlines has halted flights to Tel Aviv for security reasons, reflecting the broader concern among airlines regarding the safety of air travel in the region. The British government has also advised UK airlines to avoid Lebanese airspace until early November, citing risks associated with military activities.
As the situation continues to evolve, travelers are advised to stay informed about flight statuses and potential disruptions. The escalation of conflict in the region serves as a reminder of the fragility of peace and the impact it can have on global travel.
