Education Amidst Conflict in Gaza
In the midst of the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza, students like Mahmoud Abu Hasira are striving to prepare for their Tawjihi high school exams under dire conditions. Mahmoud, who studies in a tent in Deir al-Balah, faces extreme challenges such as heat, cold, and noise, which hinder his ability to focus on his studies. The war, which began in October 2023, has already caused significant disruptions, leading to the loss of the entire last school year for many students. The Palestinian Ministry of Education has announced plans to organize Tawjihi exams in 2025, but the logistics remain uncertain due to the ongoing conflict.
Challenges Faced by Students
Students in Gaza are forced to adapt to their new reality, with many schools converted into shelters, rendering them unsuitable for education. Mahmoud's situation is echoed by fellow student Aya Al-Arqan, who, despite having a room in a converted classroom, struggles with the noise of her large family and the lack of basic study materials. Both students highlight the difficulties posed by power outages and the impracticality of online learning, which relies on stable internet access that is currently unavailable. Aya's reliance on candles for light and the high cost of educational resources further complicate her preparation for the exams.
Ministry's Response and Future Outlook
The Palestinian Ministry of Education is attempting to address these challenges by mobilizing resources to support students. Spokesman Sadiq Al-Khudour mentioned that the ministry has developed educational packages and virtual schools to assist approximately 31,000 Tawjihi students in Gaza. Plans are in place for students who missed the previous academic year's exams to take them in February 2025, while current students are expected to sit for their exams in June. However, the exact format of the exams remains undecided, with options for in-person or electronic assessments being considered. Despite the bleak circumstances, the ministry's efforts aim to restore hope and provide educational continuity for students in Gaza.
