Gaza Ministry of Health Accuses Israel of Grave Violations
The Gaza Strip's Ministry of Health has made serious allegations against Israel, claiming that the Israeli military has been exhuming graves and sending back the bodies of 88 martyrs in a container without any identifying documentation. This act, described as immoral and illegal, has sparked outrage among Palestinian officials and families of the deceased. In a statement released on Wednesday, the ministry condemned the Israeli occupation for its actions, emphasizing the lack of coordination with local or international bodies during this sensitive process. The ministry has since formed a committee to handle the bodies with dignity and prepare them for burial.
The situation escalated when the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) refused to participate in the transfer of the bodies due to the absence of proper documentation. ICRC spokesman Hisham Mehanna stated that without lists or evidence identifying the deceased, they could not assist in the process. He reaffirmed the right of families to receive information about their loved ones and conduct respectful burial ceremonies.
Israeli Defense Forces Deny Allegations of Misconduct
In response to these allegations, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have rejected claims of misconduct, insisting that their policy is to treat all bodies with dignity and respect. They argue that the exhumation of bodies is part of an effort to identify those who may have been captured during the ongoing conflict, which has intensified since October 7. The IDF stated that the identification process occurs in secure conditions, ensuring respect for the deceased.
The backdrop to this controversy is the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in over 137,000 casualties, including many women and children, and has left thousands missing. Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israel continues its operations, leading to severe humanitarian crises and widespread destruction in the region.
