Scandal Rocks French Rugby Team in Argentina
French rugby is facing serious allegations as two young players, Oscar Jégou and Hugo Auradou, have been accused of sexual assault in Argentina. The incident allegedly took place in Mendoza, just after their first match with the French national team against the Pumas. Both players were arrested in Buenos Aires and are set to be transferred to Mendoza for police custody.
Rising Stars Under Scrutiny
Oscar Jégou, 21, and Hugo Auradou, 20, were seen as promising talents in French rugby. Jégou, who hails from La Rochelle, has had a turbulent career marked by a one-month suspension for testing positive for cocaine earlier this season. Despite this setback, he made a significant comeback, playing 16 matches for Stade Rochelais and winning the Under-20 World Cup last summer.
Hugo Auradou, the son of former French international David Auradou, has been a key player for Pau in the Top 14. He made his professional debut at 18 and has since established himself as a reliable second row. Both players were part of the French U20 team that won the world championship in 2023.
A Series of Unfortunate Events
This scandal comes on the heels of another controversy involving French rugby. Melvyn Jaminet, another player, was recently excluded from the team for making racist comments on social media. His remarks, which were widely condemned, have added to the turmoil within the French rugby community.
The French Rugby Federation has expressed its dismay over these incidents. Federation President Florian Grill stated, 'If the facts are proven, they are extremely serious.' The Federation has also emphasized its commitment to diversity and inclusion, condemning any form of discriminatory behavior.
The French team was in Argentina for a series of friendly matches, but these events have cast a shadow over their tour. The players accused of sexual assault face serious charges, including sexual abuse involving carnal access and the participation of two or more people. They will be formally notified of the accusations once they are transferred to Mendoza.
