French Rugby Players Arrested in Argentina for Alleged Sexual Assault
The investigation into the alleged sexual assault of two French rugby players, Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou, is ongoing in Argentina. The players were taken into custody by Buenos Aires police on Monday following a complaint by a young woman. The French Rugby Federation (FFR) has been actively involved, with President Florian Grill and Vice-President Jean-Marc Lhermet, along with the French Ambassador and Consul in Argentina, meeting the players.
The FFR released a statement indicating that Auradou and Jegou admitted to having a sexual relationship with the complainant but denied any form of violence. The investigation continues in Mendoza, where further hearings will be conducted. The FFR officials have decided to remain in Argentina to assist with the investigation rather than travel to Uruguay for a scheduled test match.
Prosecution and Potential Consequences
The public prosecutor of Mendoza has reported that there are 'convincing elements' and 'injuries compatible' with the alleged victim's story. Daniela Chaler, speaking to LV10 radio, emphasized that the injuries could be consistent with the victim's account but are not exclusively indicative of a sexual assault. The detailed testimony of the victim aligns with the medico-legal findings, leading the magistrate to request pre-trial detention for the players.
The spokesperson for the Mendoza public prosecutor's office, Martin Ahumada, stated that Auradou and Jegou could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The players remain in pre-trial detention in Buenos Aires as the investigation proceeds. Both players have consistently denied the allegations, asserting that the encounter was consensual and that the young woman left their hotel voluntarily before filing the complaint.
The French Rugby Federation has expressed its commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation. President Florian Grill remarked that if the allegations are proven, the incident would be 'incredibly serious' and contrary to the values of rugby. The FFR continues to support both the investigation and the alleged victim, emphasizing the importance of uncovering the truth.
