Legislative Elections Shake Up French Politics
The second round of the legislative elections on July 7 has left France in a state of political uncertainty. The presidential coalition, Ensemble, lost its status as the most represented group, securing only 156 seats. The New Popular Front (NFP) emerged as the leading political force with 174 seats, although it fell short of an absolute majority, which requires 289 seats. The far-right National Rally also made significant gains, obtaining 143 seats.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Monday morning. However, Macron asked Attal to remain in his position temporarily to ensure the stability of the country, especially with important events like the Olympic Games on the horizon. Attal had won his seat in Hauts-de-Seine with 61% of the vote.
Internal Struggles and Future Prospects
Despite the NFP's success, internal conflicts are surfacing. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a prominent figure in the NFP, faces opposition within his coalition regarding his potential appointment as Prime Minister. Marine Tondelier, a key member of the NFP, stated that a good Prime Minister must unite the country and their party.
Adding to the political turmoil, Clémentine Autain, a re-elected MP from Seine-Saint-Denis, announced her departure from France Insoumise (LFI), the largest component of the NFP coalition. Autain cited internal purges as her reason for leaving, mentioning that several key members were not re-nominated by LFI.
In other news, the Minister of Education, Nicole Belloubet, announced that the baccalaureate exam results showed a success rate of over 85%. This announcement came as a relief to nearly 730,000 candidates who received their results on Monday.
Meanwhile, Arcom has started the hearings for the allocation of 15 digital terrestrial television (DTT) frequencies. Over the next ten days, 25 candidates, including Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky and the Ouest-France group, will present their cases.
