Freedom of Expression in French Football
The president of the French Football Federation (FFF), Philippe Diallo, has emphasized his commitment to the freedom of expression for players of the French national team. In a recent interview with AFP, Diallo stated that he had no 'differences' with the players regarding their opinions on the legislative elections, underscoring that everyone should be pleased that young players are concerned about societal and generational issues.
The Role of Neutrality
While Diallo guarantees the players' freedom of expression, he also highlighted the importance of maintaining the federation's neutrality. 'As an institution, I must respect neutrality,' Diallo explained. However, he made it clear that he would speak out if fundamental values such as freedom, equality, fraternity, and the rule of law were threatened by a potential government led by the extreme right and the National Rally (RN).
Players' Stance on Legislative Elections
Since arriving in Germany for Euro-2024, French players have been vocal about their political stances. Marcus Thuram and Jules Koundé have urged blocking the RN, while team captain Kylian Mbappé and midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni have positioned themselves against political extremes. Other players, like Adrien Rabiot, have called for voting but suggested that the team should not be distracted by the election issue, emphasizing that the 'future' of the country is at stake.
- Philippe Diallo stressed that the French Football Federation must maintain a stance of neutrality as an institution. However, he also pointed out that the federation would not remain silent if fundamental values were at risk.
- French players have been asked repeatedly about their views on the legislative elections since they arrived in Germany for Euro-2024. This ongoing dialogue reflects the players' engagement with current societal issues.
- Adrien Rabiot's comments stand out as he suggested that while it is important to vote, the team should not be overly distracted by political matters during their tournament preparations.
