IDF Reports Fatal Operational Accident in Southern Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that four reserve soldiers were tragically killed in an operational accident in southern Lebanon on December 8, 2024. The soldiers, identified as Major (res.) Yevgeny Zinnershein, 43, from Zichron Yaakov; Captain (res.) Sagi Yaakov Rubinstein, 31, from Levia; Major (res.) Binyamin Destao Negusa, 28, from Beit Shemesh; and Major (res.) Erez Ben Ephraim, 25, from Ramat Gan, were part of a reserve force from Brigade 226, operating under Division 146.

The incident occurred during a patrol in the Levona area, where the soldiers entered an underground passage that contained a weapons storage shaft. An explosion ensued, leading to the deaths of the four soldiers. The IDF is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion, including the possibility that it involved a bomb belonging to their forces. This tragic event highlights the dangers faced by IDF personnel during operations in volatile regions.

Community Mourning and Tributes

In the aftermath of the incident, local communities have expressed their deep sorrow. The Beit Shemesh Municipality announced the death of Major Benjamin Destao Negusa, noting that he was the 17th resident of the city to fall in the current conflict. Mayor Shmuel Greenberg lamented the loss, stating, "The heart aches and words find it difficult to express the magnitude of the loss. We will remember his heroism for the defense of the people of Israel, forever."

Similarly, the local council of Zichron Yaakov extended condolences to the family of Major Yevgeny Zinnershein, emphasizing the community's shared grief. Funerals for the fallen soldiers are being arranged, with public calls for community support during this difficult time. The IDF continues to address threats from Hezbollah in the region, conducting operations to neutralize potential dangers while adhering to ceasefire agreements with Lebanon.
