Devastating Floods Claim Lives and Displace Families in Yemen
Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Yemen's Dhamar Governorate, leading to the tragic loss of 27 lives and injuring 6 others, as reported by Anis Al-Asbahi, spokesman for the Ministry of Health of the Ansar Allah group (Houthis). The floods were exacerbated by the bursting of a small dam, forcing numerous families to flee their homes. Al-Asbahi highlighted that the situation is dire, with dozens reported missing and families displaced in the village of Al-Jarf in the Bani Musa district. The Ministry of Health is actively monitoring the crisis, providing necessary medical care and coordinating urgent assistance for the affected families.
In addition to the devastation in Dhamar, the Al Hudaydah Governorate has also been severely impacted, with the death toll rising to 84 from floods since the beginning of August. The United Nations has reported that 18 million people in Yemen are in urgent need of humanitarian aid, emphasizing the widespread impact of these natural disasters. The floods have submerged hundreds of homes and caused extensive damage to infrastructure, exacerbating the already challenging humanitarian situation in Yemen, which has been enduring a protracted conflict for nearly a decade.
- Yemen has been facing increasingly severe weather conditions, with heavy rainfall contributing to flooding across multiple governorates. The humanitarian crisis is compounded by ongoing economic struggles and infrastructure challenges due to a decade-long conflict between the Houthi forces and the internationally recognized government.
