FIFA Investigates Racism Allegations Against Argentine Players
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has launched an investigation into allegations of racist behavior by Argentine players towards their French counterparts. The incident reportedly took place during the Argentine team's celebration of their Copa America victory over Colombia.
In a statement, FIFA emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discrimination, stating, 'FIFA strongly condemns any form of discrimination by anyone, whether they are players, fans, or officials.'
Chelsea Takes Disciplinary Action
Chelsea FC has also taken disciplinary measures against its Argentine midfielder, Enzo Fernandez, who was seen participating in the offensive chants. The club acknowledged Fernandez's public apology and stated that it would use the incident to raise awareness about discrimination.
Fernandez issued an apology on Instagram, expressing regret for his actions. 'I deeply apologize for the video clip that was posted on my Instagram channel during the national team’s celebrations. The song contains very offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words,' he wrote.
The French Football Federation (FFF) has announced plans to file a formal complaint with FIFA, citing the racist, xenophobic, homophobic, and transphobic nature of the chants. French Sports Minister Amelie O'Dea-Castera has called for strict measures, labeling the behavior as 'unacceptable.'
Javier Mascherano, coach of the Argentine Olympic team, defended Fernandez, claiming the video was taken out of context. 'As Argentines, if there is one thing we are not, it is being racist. Quite the opposite,' Mascherano stated.
The controversy has sparked widespread condemnation, with French and Spanish Barcelona defender Jules Conde, known for his anti-racism activism, labeling the incident as 'unfortunate.'
- The French Football Federation (FFF) will present the video evidence to FIFA authorities, which shows Argentine players engaging in discriminatory chants. The video was initially broadcast live on Enzo Fernandez's Instagram account while the team was traveling from the Hard Rock Stadium to their hotel.
- The offensive song, which includes racist, xenophobic, homophobic, and transphobic slurs, had previously surfaced during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. At that time, the FFF and the organization SOS Racisme had also filed complaints, leading to widespread condemnation from senior French government officials.
