Father Matthieu Jasseron Leaves Priesthood Amid Controversy

Father Matthieu Jasseron, a former TikTok celebrity known for his progressive views, announced his departure from the priesthood on October 20, 2024, in a heartfelt YouTube video titled "coming out spiritual: I tell you everything about why I give up my cassock." The 39-year-old, who was ordained five and a half years ago, expressed that he no longer feels aligned with the institutional Church, stating, "I am retiring from the priesthood. I am no longer in tune enough with the institutional Church to continue to remain one of its preachers."

Jasseron gained prominence on social media, particularly TikTok, where he amassed over 1.2 million followers before stepping back from the platform in December 2023. In his recent video, he reflected on the struggles he faced within the Church, including allegations of violence and intimidation from higher-ups. He recounted being "molested" by a bishop and facing pressure from secret intelligence services, while also discussing the detrimental impact of his progressive theological positions, especially regarding homosexuality, which had drawn ire from conservative factions within the Church.

Despite these challenges, Jasseron emphasized that he continues to believe in the "beauty of the Church" and does not harbor resentment. He described his current lifestyle as living "as a hermit in the middle of the woods," where he is focusing on writing and studying psychology. He is also preparing to release a new book titled "The Power of Kintsugi: Sublimate What is Broken."

A Critique of the Church's Institutional Structure

In his video, Jasseron criticized the hierarchical structure of the Catholic Church, likening it to a political body that fosters an environment ripe for abuse. He argued that the concentration of power among bishops can lead to a culture of silence and intimidation, stating, "The Church does not recruit its officials to become potential abusers. It is just, in its way of life, a fertile ground capable of transforming any altar boy into a despicable inquisitor and sometimes even a real predator."

Jasseron called for reforms within the Church, advocating for a more democratic and supportive structure that includes checks and balances to prevent abuses of power. He clarified that his intention is not to incite revolution but to encourage a spirit of collaboration and accountability among Church officials. As he embarks on this new chapter of his life, he remains committed to providing spiritual guidance to those seeking it, inviting individuals on a "spiritual quest" to reach out to him.

Father Matthieu's departure from the priesthood highlights the ongoing tensions within the Catholic Church regarding progressive ideologies and institutional authority, reflecting broader societal debates about faith, identity, and the role of religious leaders in modern society.
